Lerner was coronated as the princeling of contemporary autofiction after the publication of his first two novels, Leaving the Atocha Station and 10:04. I am one such writer and I suspect that Ben Lerner is too. There is a certain type of writer-usually white, male, straight-for whom the head and the heart seem to be in constant conflict a tension between irony and sincerity, formalism and feeling. A novel that was crafty, clever, maybe a little cold. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.Ī novel to be admired rather than experienced, I assumed her to be saying. She was describing a novel that she’d just acquired: It’s a book of the head more than the heart, she said. My wife and I dined recently with an old friend and his new wife, who worked in publishing.
